Because a home test records fewer signals than an attended laboratory study, it may not answer every sleep-related question. If the recording is unclear, symptoms do not match the result, or another sleep disorder is suspected, a clinician may recommend a fuller sleep study.

Follow the clinic's instructions for attaching each sensor, starting the recording and returning the device. Keep your usual sleep routine unless instructed otherwise, and report if a sensor comes loose or the night is very unusual. Tell the clinician about snoring, witnessed pauses, morning headaches, daytime sleepiness, medicines and alcohol use because these details help interpret the tracing.

Arrange prompt medical review for severe daytime sleepiness that makes driving unsafe, repeated waking with choking, or breathing difficulty while awake. Seek emergency help for sudden severe breathlessness, chest pain, blue lips, collapse or new confusion. A home recording should not delay urgent care for symptoms occurring while awake.
