What is hip resurfacing done with?

In hip resurfacing, the damaged surface of the femoral head is shaped and covered with a smooth metal cap. A matching component lines the hip socket. The femoral head and its neck remain in place, unlike total hip replacement, where the femoral head is removed and replaced with a stemmed component.

Cobalt-chrome alloy is used for the resurfacing bearing surfaces because it can be formed into smooth, hard components. The design creates a metal-on-metal joint, so candidacy requires careful discussion of bone quality, hip shape, activity goals, and the risks and follow-up associated with the implant.
