What is HER2-targeted therapy done with?

HER2-targeted medicines are chosen after testing shows whether cancer cells carry increased HER2 activity. HER2 antibody drugs attach to the target and can block growth messages or help immune cells recognise the cancer cell. An antibody-drug conjugate uses an antibody as a guide for carrying a cell-killing medicine toward cells with the target.

The treatment plan may combine a HER2-directed medicine with chemotherapy, hormone therapy, surgery, or radiotherapy. The combination and order depend on the tumour type, stage, test findings, previous treatment, and your health.

Ask which HER2 test was used, what the medicine is intended to do, and why a combination is recommended. Share your history of heart disease, lung disease, allergies, and previous treatments. Keep a list of medicines and supplements. Monitoring may include blood tests, symptom checks, and heart assessments for medicines that can affect cardiac function. Follow the infusion or appointment instructions and call the team before changing a dose.

Tell staff at once about throat tightness, wheezing, severe dizziness, flushing, chest pain, or trouble breathing during an infusion. Between treatments, contact the oncology service promptly for fever, a new or spreading rash, sudden swelling, worsening breathlessness, or unusual tiredness with faintness. The team can determine whether the symptom reflects an infusion reaction, infection, organ effect, or another cause.
