What are HER2 antibody drugs used for?

HER2 is a protein that can send growth signals to a cell. Some cancer cells make too much HER2 or have an excess of HER2 receptors. An antibody drug is designed to recognise that target and interfere with growth signals, help the immune system identify the cell, or deliver another medicine to it. Testing the tumour helps the oncology team decide whether a HER2-directed option is relevant.

Ask how the HER2 result was established and which drug is being proposed. Treatment may be given through a vein or, for some medicines, by another route and schedule. Monitoring can include examinations, blood tests, and heart checks when the selected drug can affect heart function. Do not stop treatment or alter appointments without contacting the oncology team.

Contact the treatment team promptly for fever, chills, wheezing, facial swelling, a new rash, chest discomfort, faintness, worsening breathlessness, or swelling in the legs. During or soon after an infusion, report warmth, back pain, dizziness, tightness in the throat, or difficulty breathing immediately to staff. These symptoms can have several causes, but rapid assessment helps the team treat a reaction or another problem safely.
