What Is a Hamstring Autograft Used For?

During ACL reconstruction, the surgeon removes suitable tendon tissue from the inner thigh or hamstring region and prepares it as a graft. The graft is passed through tunnels in the thighbone and shinbone, then secured so it can act as a replacement for the injured ligament. It is the person’s own tissue, which is why it is called an autograft. The knee still needs time and guided rehabilitation for the graft to mature and for strength and coordination to return.

Before surgery, discuss medicines, smoking, previous knee problems, and your activity goals. After surgery, protect the knee as directed, complete the prescribed exercises, and use the brace or crutches according to the rehabilitation plan. Early work often focuses on swelling control, knee extension, quadriceps activation, and safe walking before more demanding strengthening and sport drills are introduced.

Contact the surgical team for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, uncontrolled pain, or a sudden loss of knee movement. Seek urgent care for a cold or unusually pale foot, new severe calf swelling, chest pain, or breathlessness. A new twist, fall, or giving-way episode should also be reported.

Ask which hamstring tendon will be used, how the harvest site may feel, what restrictions apply, how rehabilitation will progress, and which milestones are needed before returning to sport.
