What is a growth scan done with?

During a growth scan, a sonographer moves an ultrasound probe over gel on the abdomen. Sound waves create images of the baby and uterus without using ionising radiation. The examination can measure parts of the baby, review movement and position, estimate growth, assess the placenta and check the amount of amniotic fluid.

Doppler ultrasound may be used to examine blood flow in selected vessels, such as those supplying the placenta. A standard growth assessment does not require three-dimensional images, although 3D or 4D technology may be available for additional views when clinically appropriate. The scan’s purpose is assessment, not a guarantee about the baby’s future size or health.

Wear clothing that allows access to the lower abdomen and bring any pregnancy records requested by the clinic. Ask whether your bladder should be full; preparation varies with the stage of pregnancy and local practice. The sonographer may ask you to change position so clearer images can be obtained. You can ask when and how the findings will be explained.

A growth scan is a planned assessment, not a substitute for urgent maternity advice. Contact your maternity unit promptly for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe abdominal pain, severe headache with visual symptoms, or a noticeable reduction in your baby’s usual movements.

Ask why the scan was recommended, which measurements will be taken, whether Doppler checks are planned, and when the report will be discussed. Ask what happens if growth, fluid, placenta or blood-flow findings need a repeat scan or closer monitoring.
