What is FUE punch used for?

FUE stands for follicular unit extraction. The punch is a narrow, hollow cutting instrument that separates a follicular unit from the surrounding scalp tissue. A clinician can then collect the graft and prepare it for placement in an area with thinning or absent hair. The punch may be manual or motorised, and its size and movement are selected according to the follicle characteristics and the treatment plan.

The tool is used during the harvesting stage; it does not by itself decide which hairs should be moved or where they should be placed. The overall result depends on assessment, graft handling, recipient-site design, and aftercare.

Ask the clinic how the donor area will be assessed, how grafts will be protected after extraction, and whether the proposed plan matches your pattern of hair loss. Tell the clinician about scalp conditions, medicines, allergies, and previous procedures. Follow the preparation instructions you receive, including guidance about washing the scalp and medicines that may affect bleeding.

Contact the treating clinic if bleeding does not settle with the advised pressure, pain is worsening rather than easing, or the scalp becomes increasingly swollen, hot, or tender. Pus, fever, spreading redness, or a sudden change in the appearance of the grafted area needs prompt medical advice. Seek urgent care for severe swelling affecting the eyes or breathing difficulty.
