What Is Fracture Fixation Surgery Done With?

Plates sit along the outside of a bone and screws hold the plate and fracture fragments in a planned position. An intramedullary nail lies inside the hollow centre of a long bone and is secured with locking screws. The choice depends on the bone, fracture pattern, soft tissues, and the movement or loading expected during healing. C-arm fluoroscopy can provide live X-ray views to help confirm alignment and implant placement.

Before surgery, share your medicines, allergies, medical conditions, and any previous anaesthetic problems. Afterward, follow the surgeon’s weight-bearing and wound-care instructions, keep the incision clean, and attend imaging or physiotherapy reviews. Use walking aids correctly and do not test the repaired limb by lifting or twisting before clearance.

Seek urgent advice for severe or escalating pain, new numbness, a pale or cold hand or foot, worsening swelling, wound drainage, fever, calf swelling with breathlessness, or a sudden loss of movement. A fall or new impact on the operated limb also warrants prompt review.

Ask which fixation method is planned, whether the hardware is intended to remain, how much weight you may place on the limb, and how imaging will be used during follow-up.
