What Is Fracture Casting Done With?

Plaster of Paris is applied as wet bandage material that hardens into a supportive shell. Fibreglass cast material is a lightweight synthetic layer that also hardens around the padded limb. The clinician may leave room for swelling at first, then replace a temporary splint or loose cast once swelling settles. The choice depends on the fracture, the limb, swelling, skin condition, and the stability needed.

Keep the cast dry unless your care team gives different instructions, and do not insert objects inside it to scratch. Elevate the limb when swelling is present, move the free fingers or toes gently, and use crutches only as instructed. Do not walk on a leg cast until weight-bearing has been cleared. Check the skin at the edges and keep follow-up appointments so alignment and healing can be assessed.

Contact urgent care for increasing pain or tightness, numbness, tingling, blue or unusually cold fingers or toes, inability to move them, severe swelling, a cracked or wet cast, or drainage and fever. These changes can signal pressure, circulation trouble, infection, or loss of support and need assessment.

Ask which material was chosen, how long the cast is expected to stay, whether you may bear weight, how to bathe safely, and which symptoms should trigger an immediate review.
