What is folic acid used for?

The neural tube develops very early in pregnancy, sometimes before a person knows they are pregnant. Folic acid supports the formation of new cells and is therefore commonly discussed during preconception planning and antenatal care.

It is not a fertility medicine and cannot correct every pregnancy risk. A clinician may recommend a particular strength when medical history, medicines or a previous pregnancy changes the plan.

Discuss folic acid before trying to conceive, especially if you take regular medicine or have a condition affecting nutrient absorption. Use the product and dose advised for you, and avoid doubling doses after a missed tablet unless your clinician says to do so.

Keep a record of supplements so your maternity team can check for overlapping ingredients. Preconception care can help review medicines, health conditions and pregnancy planning.

Contact your maternity or primary-care team if you discover a pregnancy while taking supplements, cannot keep tablets down, or are unsure which dose is appropriate. Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, fainting or marked shortness of breath in pregnancy.
