What is finasteride used for?

Finasteride blocks an enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, commonly called DHT. Lowering DHT can slow the shrinking of susceptible scalp follicles in pattern hair loss and may support thicker-looking growth over time. The medicine does not address every cause of shedding, such as thyroid disease, nutritional deficiency, scalp inflammation, or sudden illness.

The hair-loss form is generally considered for appropriate patients after a diagnosis. Benefits require continued use and are assessed over time rather than after a single dose. A clinician should explain the intended dose, alternatives, and what happens if treatment stops.

Tell the prescriber about your medical history, liver problems, medicines, fertility plans, and any mood or sexual symptoms. Take only the prescribed formulation and do not share tablets. People who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets because the active medicine can harm a developing male fetus.

Keep follow-up appointments so the diagnosis, response, and side effects can be reviewed. Do not assume every episode of hair shedding needs finasteride; examination and sometimes testing can distinguish pattern loss from other conditions.

Contact the prescriber about troublesome sexual changes, breast tenderness or enlargement, testicular pain, a new lump, or persistent low mood. Seek urgent help for thoughts of self-harm or a severe allergic reaction such as facial swelling or difficulty breathing. Report any change in breast tissue promptly.
