What is fibreglass cast material used for?

Fibreglass casting material is applied in layers over protective padding and shaped around the injured area. It hardens into a lightweight shell that limits unwanted movement while leaving room for swelling to settle when applied appropriately. The cast may support a broken bone, protect an area after an injury, or hold a joint in a prescribed position. The clinician chooses the cast length and shape according to the injury and the amount of movement that should be restricted. A cast supports healing, but it does not replace follow-up checks or instructions about weight-bearing.

Keep the cast dry unless your care team has given different instructions, and never push objects inside it to scratch. Keep the supported limb raised when swelling is present and move the fingers or toes regularly if you have been told it is safe. Do not cut, loosen, or alter the cast yourself. Check the skin at its edges and follow the prescribed limits for walking, lifting, or using the limb. Attend scheduled reviews so fit and healing can be assessed.

Contact the treating team promptly if the cast becomes wet, cracked, loose, tight, or develops a bad smell, or if pain and swelling are increasing. Seek urgent care if fingers or toes become blue, pale, cold, numb, or difficult to move, or if severe pain is not relieved by the advised plan. Fever or drainage around the cast also needs medical assessment.
