What Is Excimer Laser Used For?

A dermatology excimer laser commonly produces a narrow ultraviolet beam, allowing treatment to be directed at affected patches while limiting exposure of nearby skin. It may be considered for localised areas of pigment loss or other inflammatory skin problems when a dermatologist believes targeted light is appropriate. The wavelength, dose, and treatment schedule are selected for the person and the area being treated.

Tell your dermatologist about medicines that increase light sensitivity, a history of unusual reactions to sunlight, active infection, and any products applied to the area. Attend sessions as scheduled so the response can be assessed and settings adjusted. After treatment, follow the prescribed skin-care instructions and protect the treated area from excess sunlight. Mild warmth or redness may occur, while marked blistering or persistent soreness needs advice.

Contact the clinic if redness becomes intense or spreads, pain continues to build, blisters appear, or the skin develops significant swelling, drainage, or a new rash. Ask for prompt assessment if a treated area becomes very sensitive to light or shows signs of infection. Do not increase exposure or session frequency on your own.
