What is ethinylestradiol used for?

Ethinylestradiol is a laboratory-made form of oestrogen. In a combined pill, it works with a progestogen to suppress ovulation, thicken cervical mucus and change the womb lining. These effects make fertilisation less likely. Some combined hormonal products may also make periods more predictable or reduce menstrual symptoms, but suitability depends on personal and family history.

Take the prescribed product exactly as directed and do not share it with anyone. Tell your clinician about migraine with aura, previous blood clots, smoking, high blood pressure, liver disease, or medicines that may interact. If you miss doses, follow the product’s missed-dose instructions. Ethinylestradiol does not protect against sexually transmitted infections, so condoms may still be needed.

Get urgent medical help for sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling or pain, sudden weakness, trouble speaking, or a severe unusual headache. Contact your prescriber about persistent troublesome symptoms or suspected pregnancy. Do not restart or stop a combined product without advice if you have a new health problem.
