What is endometrial ablation done with?

The exact equipment depends on the technique chosen by the gynaecology team. A hysteroscope is a slender camera that may allow the clinician to view the inside of the womb. Another instrument then delivers the selected treatment to the endometrium, the lining that contributes to menstrual bleeding. Methods can use heat, heated fluid, radiofrequency energy or a balloon system. The aim is to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding, not to remove the womb.

Before treatment, discuss pregnancy testing, contraception, medicines and the anaesthetic plan. Endometrial ablation is not suitable for someone who wants to become pregnant, so reliable contraception remains necessary afterwards. Cramps and watery or blood-stained discharge may occur during recovery. Follow instructions about bathing, intercourse, exercise and pain relief, and attend the planned review.

Contact the surgical team for fever, worsening pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, difficulty passing urine or persistent vomiting. Get urgent help for collapse, severe pain, breathing difficulty or bleeding that makes you feel faint. A small amount of discharge can be expected, but a sudden change or deterioration deserves medical advice.

Ask which ablation method is planned, whether a hysteroscope will be used, what anaesthetic is appropriate, how contraception will be arranged, and which recovery symptoms should prompt a call.
