What is embryo transfer done with?

Short answer

Embryo transfer is done with a soft catheter that guides an embryo into the womb, often alongside micronised progesterone support.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the procedure involves

During assisted reproduction, a clinician loads the selected embryo into a thin, flexible transfer catheter. The catheter passes gently through the vagina and cervix into the womb. The embryo is released, then the catheter is withdrawn. Ultrasound may help the team guide its position. Micronised progesterone may be prescribed to support the womb lining before and after transfer; the route and schedule depend on your treatment plan.

How to prepare and recover

Follow the clinic’s instructions about medicines, appointments and bladder preparation. Continue prescribed progesterone unless your fertility team tells you to stop. Mild cramping or light spotting can occur after the catheter is removed. Take it easy if you feel uncomfortable, but ordinary gentle activity is usually addressed by your clinic’s advice. Use a pregnancy test on the date provided rather than testing too early.

When to contact your care team

Contact the fertility clinic promptly for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pelvic pain, fever, faintness, breathing trouble or marked abdominal swelling. These symptoms need assessment because they can reflect a complication of fertility treatment rather than the transfer itself. Seek urgent help for collapse, severe breathlessness or sudden intense pain.

Questions to ask

Ask which catheter will be used, how your embryo will be selected, how long to continue micronised progesterone, which symptoms are expected, and exactly when to take the pregnancy test.
