What Is Elbow Arthroscopy Done With?

The arthroscope has a light and camera that sends an enlarged view of the inside of the elbow to a monitor. The surgeon fills and gently moves the joint as needed to see the relevant surfaces. Separate instruments can remove loose fragments, smooth irritated tissue, release stiffness, or address selected cartilage and tendon problems, depending on the diagnosis.

The operation is performed with anaesthesia and careful positioning because important nerves and blood vessels pass near the elbow. The number and location of the openings depend on the part of the joint being treated. Arthroscopy is not suitable for every elbow problem, so imaging and examination guide the choice.

Follow the instructions about medicines, fasting, and arranging transport before surgery. Afterward, keep dressings clean, use the prescribed movement plan, and avoid lifting until the surgeon gives permission. Early therapy may focus on reducing swelling and restoring safe elbow motion; strengthening is added as healing allows. Keep follow-up appointments so movement and wound healing can be checked.

Call the surgical team for increasing redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, or a dressing that becomes soaked. Seek urgent care for a new inability to move the hand, severe swelling, or persistent numbness in the forearm or fingers.

Ask what the camera will assess, which repair or removal is planned, how nerve safety is managed, when elbow motion starts, and which activities must wait during recovery.
