What is ear wax removal done with?

Microsuction uses a fine tip connected to a low-pressure suction system. The clinician guides it around the wax under an illuminated view, removing material in a controlled manner. Depending on the examination, a small curette or other manual instrument may also be used. The chosen method depends on the wax, the ear canal and your medical history.

Water irrigation is another approach used in some settings, but it is not suitable for every ear. An examination helps identify concerns such as a damaged eardrum or previous ear surgery before a method is selected.

Tell the clinician about pain, discharge, ear surgery, a perforated eardrum or sudden hearing change. Avoid putting objects into the ear because they can push wax deeper or injure the canal. Follow any preparation advice provided, and mention medicines or conditions that may affect bleeding or healing. Arrange review if blockage or muffled hearing continues after removal.
