What is an ear microsuction device used for?

A clinician uses a small suction tip while viewing the ear canal with magnification or an illuminated instrument. The tip draws wax out in a controlled way rather than pushing it deeper. Different tips may be selected for the amount and position of wax. The procedure is intended for the ear canal and should be performed by someone trained to inspect the ear first.

Removing an obstruction may improve muffled hearing, fullness or discomfort when wax is the cause. Ear symptoms can have other causes, so clearing wax does not automatically explain every change in hearing or pain.

Tell the clinician about ear pain, discharge, previous ear surgery, a known eardrum problem or sudden hearing change before treatment. Do not insert cotton buds, hairpins or other objects into the canal. Afterward, follow the advice given about keeping the ear dry and monitoring hearing. Further assessment may be needed if symptoms remain once wax has been removed.

Seek prompt medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, severe pain, bleeding, fluid from the ear, marked dizziness or weakness of the face. Do not arrange routine wax removal as a substitute for urgent assessment when these symptoms are present.
