The system combines carefully positioned photographs with close-up images of selected lesions. These images create a visual record of location, shape, colour and surface detail. At a later appointment, the clinician can review earlier and newer images side by side. This may help identify a mole that deserves a closer examination, while also helping avoid unnecessary concern about a mark that has remained stable. Mapping does not diagnose skin cancer by itself; a dermatologist may examine a changing area with a dermatoscope and decide whether further assessment is needed.

Wear clothing that allows the relevant skin to be photographed and mention any new, itchy, bleeding or irritated marks before imaging begins. The clinician may take overview photographs first, then record individual moles in more detail. Keep the follow-up plan and bring attention to changes you noticed between visits. Do not pick at a mole or apply makeup over an area that needs close inspection.

Arrange a dermatology assessment promptly if a mole changes in size, outline or colour, develops a new crust, bleeds without a clear injury, or becomes persistently itchy or painful. Seek urgent medical care for bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure or for rapidly worsening swelling, redness or pain. These signs need clinical examination even when a previous mapping image looked reassuring.

Ask which areas will be photographed, how often your images should be reviewed, and which changes should trigger an earlier appointment. You can also ask whether a particular mole needs dermoscopy or another test.
