What is a dermatoscope used for?

The device uses light and magnification to reduce surface reflection and reveal colours, borders and internal patterns in a mole, freckle or other lesion. Some models can capture images for comparison over time. The findings help a trained clinician decide whether a mark looks reassuring, needs monitoring or should be investigated further.

A dermatoscope does not by itself diagnose skin cancer. Its view is one part of an examination that may also include the skin history, a full-body check and, when needed, further testing.

Point out marks that are new, changing, itchy, painful, bleeding or different from your other marks. Mention previous skin cancers, immune conditions and family history. Do not apply makeup or cover the area immediately before an appointment if the clinic has asked you to leave the skin clear, and bring earlier photographs when available.

Arrange a prompt skin assessment for a mark that changes in size, shape or colour, develops a new irregular border, repeatedly bleeds or fails to heal. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, rapidly spreading redness, fever or severe pain; these symptoms may reflect an acute problem rather than the usual reason for dermatoscopy.

Ask what features were seen through the device, whether the mark should be photographed or reviewed, when follow-up is needed, and what change should bring the appointment forward.
