What Is Custom Orthotics Done With?

A carbon-fibre orthotic shell can provide a slim, firm structure inside a shoe. An EVA foam orthotic is softer and can be used when cushioning and gradual support are priorities. The final device may combine a supporting shell with padding or a top layer so it fits the shoe and your activity. A clinician examines your foot, walking pattern, pressure points, and the problem being treated before choosing the design.

A 3D foot scanner records the shape of the foot without making a plaster mould. The scan is one part of the assessment; it does not decide the prescription by itself. The orthotic is then shaped to influence how force passes through the foot and lower limb.

Bring the shoes you use most often, especially if they have removable insoles. Ask how long to wear the orthotics at first, because a gradual break-in can help your feet adjust. Check the skin after wearing them and report rubbing, pressure, numbness, or worsening pain. Keep the devices clean and dry according to the maker's instructions, and attend any planned fitting review.

Contact the prescribing clinician if pain increases, a blister or persistent red mark develops, or the orthotic changes your walking noticeably. Seek urgent medical care for a suddenly cold or pale foot, new severe weakness, or loss of sensation that does not settle after removing the device.
