What Is a Cryotherapy Device Used For?

A cryotherapy device, sometimes called a cryogun or cryospray unit, applies a focused stream or contact source of extreme cold to a chosen skin area. The cold damages the targeted tissue, which can then dry, crust and shed as the skin heals. A clinician chooses the delivery method, exposure and treatment margin according to the lesion and its location.

Cryotherapy may be considered for selected benign lesions and some precancerous lesions after assessment. A lesion should be identified before treatment; freezing a changing, bleeding or uncertain growth without diagnosis can delay appropriate care.

Tell the clinician about poor circulation, cold sensitivity, reduced sensation, diabetes, immune problems, skin infection and medicines that affect bleeding or healing. The treatment often causes a sharp cold or stinging sensation, followed by redness, swelling, blistering or a crust. Keep the site clean, avoid picking the crust, and use only the dressings or creams recommended for that location. Protect the healing skin from friction and sun exposure.

Contact the treating clinic if pain becomes severe, redness spreads, swelling continues to increase, the site produces pus, or you develop fever. Seek urgent help for facial or throat swelling, difficulty breathing, uncontrolled bleeding, or a rapidly worsening reaction. A lesion that returns, changes, bleeds repeatedly or fails to heal needs clinical review rather than repeated home treatment.

Ask what the lesion is thought to be, why freezing is appropriate, which device method will be used, and whether a sample or another treatment is needed. Clarify wound care, expected crusting, pigment changes, scarring risk, follow-up timing and the symptoms that should prompt a call.
