What Is Computer Navigation for Surgery Used For?

The system uses information from the patient’s anatomy and tracking equipment to show the surgical team where instruments or bones are positioned. This can support alignment and placement decisions during procedures such as selected joint replacements or spine operations. The surgeon remains responsible for interpreting the information and performing the operation; navigation is an aid, not an independent operator.

Navigation is not required for every operation. Its usefulness depends on the joint or spine problem, the planned technique, available equipment and the surgeon’s experience. It also does not remove the ordinary healing process or the possible risks of surgery.

Ask which part of the operation will use navigation and whether it changes the planned incision, imaging or recovery programme. Provide an accurate list of medicines and allergies, follow instructions about fasting or skin preparation, and arrange help for the early recovery period if needed.

After surgery, follow the instructions for wound care, walking, exercises and follow-up. Navigation may help with surgical positioning, but rehabilitation still protects healing and rebuilds function.

After an operation, call the care team about increasing redness or drainage, fever, pain that is worsening rather than settling, new weakness or numbness, or a limb that becomes unusually cold or discoloured. Seek urgent help for chest pain, difficulty breathing or sudden severe neurological symptoms.

Ask what problem navigation is expected to address, what information the system uses, whether the operation can be performed without it, and how the technology affects your rehabilitation plan.
