What Is CO2 Laser Used For?

CO2 means carbon dioxide. The laser energy is absorbed by water in the skin, allowing a clinician to remove or heat precise columns or layers of tissue. This controlled injury starts a healing response and can soften the appearance of uneven texture, acne scars, fine lines, and some other surface changes. Fully ablative and fractional approaches affect different amounts of skin, so their recovery and suitability differ.

The treatment is not appropriate for every scar, pigment concern, skin tone, or active skin problem. The clinician must balance the intended resurfacing effect against irritation, prolonged redness, infection, and changes in pigmentation.

Before treatment, disclose recent tanning, cold sores, active acne, medicines, previous scarring, and any tendency to develop pigmentation after inflammation. Follow the preparation instructions and arrange the recommended aftercare. During healing, cleanse gently, keep the area moisturised as directed, avoid picking, and protect it carefully from sunlight. Recovery varies with the laser settings, treatment area, and depth.

Contact the treating team if pain, swelling, redness, or discharge is increasing rather than settling. Prompt review is needed for fever, spreading redness, pus, eye symptoms, extensive blistering, or a sudden marked change in skin colour.
