What Is Clubfoot Casting Done With?

The clinician gently positions the baby’s foot and wraps it in a cast that holds the correction achieved during that visit. As the soft tissues adapt, the cast is removed and replaced with another one that guides the foot a little further. The cast includes the foot and lower leg and is shaped carefully around the heel and toes.

The Ponseti method often uses serial casts followed by a brace to help maintain the correction. Casting does not mean the foot is forced suddenly into its final position. The pace is adjusted to the child’s flexibility, skin condition, circulation, and response.

Keep the cast clean and dry, and check the visible toes each day for colour, warmth, movement, and swelling. Do not insert objects inside the cast to scratch the skin. Keep scheduled changes, because the sequence is part of the correction. Follow the team’s instructions for clothing, bathing, positioning, and the transition to bracing.

Contact the care team promptly if the cast becomes wet, cracked, loose, foul-smelling, or slips. Urgent assessment is needed if toes are blue, cold, very swollen, numb, or difficult to move, or if the baby has persistent distress that cannot be settled.

Ask what material and casting method will be used, how often casts will change, how to protect the skin, and when bracing begins. Confirm how to check circulation and whom to call if the cast shifts between appointments.
