What is clotrimazole used for?

Clotrimazole interferes with the fungal cell membrane, helping clear an infection. It comes in different forms, such as a cream, external treatment, or vaginal preparation. The correct product depends on where the infection is and the formulation prescribed or recommended.

Vaginal thrush may cause itching, soreness, irritation and a thick discharge, but similar symptoms can come from bacterial vaginosis, sexually transmitted infections, dermatitis or other conditions. Clotrimazole will not treat every cause of vaginal discharge or genital irritation.

Use the product exactly as its label or clinician advises, and complete the recommended course even if symptoms improve sooner. Wash your hands before and after application. Do not put a skin cream inside the vagina unless the product is specifically made for internal use.

Tell a pharmacist or clinician if you are pregnant, have recurrent symptoms, have diabetes, or take other vaginal medicines. Some vaginal preparations can weaken latex condoms or diaphragms during treatment, so check the product instructions for safer contraception advice.

Arrange medical assessment for fever, lower abdominal pain, foul-smelling discharge, sores, bleeding unrelated to your period, or pain when passing urine. Seek help urgently for severe pelvic pain or an allergic reaction with facial swelling or breathing difficulty. Persistent or returning symptoms need a diagnosis rather than repeated self-treatment.

Ask which formulation is suitable, how to distinguish thrush from other infections, whether sexual partners need assessment, and when symptoms should have improved. Mention any previous reaction to antifungal medicines.
