What Is Circulating Tumour DNA Testing Used For?

Tumour cells can release tiny DNA fragments into the bloodstream. A blood sample is analysed for changes linked with a particular cancer. Depending on the test and clinical situation, the result may help identify a molecular feature, assess whether treatment-related changes are present, or look for molecular evidence after treatment.

The test does not replace examination, imaging, tissue biopsy, or other investigations in every situation. A result can be negative when the blood sample contains too little detectable tumour DNA, and a positive result needs interpretation alongside your diagnosis and treatment history. A clinician takes blood using a standard blood-draw procedure. Ask what question the test is intended to answer, whether the result could change your treatment, and when an answer is expected. Tell the team about current treatment and recent procedures because timing can affect how the result is interpreted.

Keep the laboratory and oncology appointments arranged for you. If the test is part of a liquid biopsy pathway, ask how the blood sample will be combined with scans, pathology, or clinical review. A liquid biopsy uses body fluid, commonly blood, to seek cancer-related information.

The blood draw itself usually needs only routine observation. Tell the clinician if bleeding continues, the puncture site becomes increasingly painful or swollen, or you feel faint and do not recover after resting. Contact your oncology team urgently for new severe symptoms related to your cancer or treatment; a DNA result is not a substitute for help with symptoms.

Ask what the test is looking for, whether it is for diagnosis, treatment selection, or follow-up, and what a negative or positive result would mean in your case. Ask whether another sample or biopsy may still be needed and how the result will be discussed.
