What is calcipotriol used for?

Calcipotriol is a topical vitamin D analogue. Applied to affected skin, it helps normalise the rapid skin-cell activity that contributes to psoriasis plaques. It may be prescribed as a cream, ointment, solution or foam, depending on the product and body site. The treatment plan can differ for thick plaques, scalp involvement or sensitive areas.

It is not a general moisturiser and should not be applied more widely than directed. Some people notice irritation, burning or redness where it is used, especially when treatment begins.

Use the prescribed amount on the psoriasis-affected skin and wash your hands afterward unless your hands are being treated. Keep it away from the eyes, mouth and other sensitive surfaces. Follow instructions about combining it with a steroid or another psoriasis medicine, and do not add extra product to speed improvement. Tell the prescriber about calcium disorders, kidney problems, pregnancy, breastfeeding and other treatments.

Ask for advice if severe irritation, a spreading rash or worsening plaques make treatment difficult. Stop and seek prompt medical guidance for symptoms suggesting a significant reaction, such as facial swelling or breathing difficulty. A clinician should also review persistent psoriasis or new extensive areas.
