What Is C-Arm Fluoroscopy Used For?

A C-arm is a mobile imaging device shaped like a curved arm. One side produces X-rays and the other captures images, allowing the team to view bones and instruments during a procedure. The device can move around the treatment area, so the clinician can check alignment from different angles without moving the patient repeatedly.

This guidance can help with accurately placing a needle for an epidural injection, aligning a broken bone during closed reduction, or positioning screws and plates during fracture fixation surgery. It does not replace the clinical examination or the treatment plan.

Tell the care team if you may be pregnant, have an allergy to contrast material, or take medicines that affect bleeding. Follow the instructions about eating, drinking, and regular medicines for your planned procedure. During imaging, remain still when asked and report discomfort rather than moving suddenly. The team uses shielding and limits imaging to what is needed for the procedure.

After a procedure, seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, widespread rash, new limb weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Contact the treating team about worsening pain, fever, increasing redness, or drainage at an injection or surgical site.
