What is breast MRI done with?

You lie face down on a padded table with your breasts positioned in openings in a dedicated breast coil. The table moves into the scanner, which uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images. The scan does not use X-rays. The machine makes loud knocking or thumping sounds, so ear protection is usually provided.

Some breast MRI examinations use gadolinium-based contrast through a small cannula in an arm vein. Contrast can make areas with increased blood supply easier to see, but it is not needed for every breast MRI. Tell the imaging team about kidney problems, previous contrast reactions, implants, pregnancy, or possible pregnancy.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about eating, drinking, medicines and arrival time. Wear clothing without metal and remove jewellery, watches, cards and other metal items. Let staff know if you have a pacemaker, cochlear implant, metal fragments, clips, or another implanted device before entering the scanner room.

During the scan, remain still and use the call button if you feel unwell or need help. If enclosed spaces make you anxious, discuss this before the appointment so the team can plan support.

Contact the imaging service promptly if you develop hives, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, severe dizziness, or repeated vomiting after contrast. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing or swelling of the throat. After the appointment, report persistent pain, increasing redness, or swelling at the cannula site.

Ask whether your scan needs contrast, how an implant or kidney condition changes the plan, and when you can expect the report. You can also ask what finding the MRI is intended to clarify and whether another imaging test is needed.
