You may notice the abdomen becoming firm, then relaxing. Practice contractions are often irregular, do not steadily build in strength, and may settle when you rest, change position, drink water, or empty your bladder. They can feel uncomfortable, but the pattern varies between pregnancies. Established labour contractions become more organised and continue despite simple changes, while the cervix begins to change. Sensations alone cannot always distinguish the two, especially near term.

Pause and observe the pattern, noting when each tightening starts and how long it lasts. Rest, change position, drink fluids, and use the comfort measures recommended by your maternity team. Keep your antenatal contact details available. If you are unsure whether contractions are changing, call the maternity unit for advice rather than relying only on a home timing record.

Contact your maternity service urgently for regular or painful tightenings before your expected time of birth, leaking fluid, vaginal bleeding, pelvic pressure, persistent lower back pain, or reduced fetal movement. These may need assessment for Preterm Labour or another pregnancy concern. Seek emergency help for severe pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, or feeling seriously unwell.

Ask how your team wants you to time contractions, which symptoms require immediate assessment, and whom to call outside clinic hours. Ask whether your personal pregnancy history changes the threshold for being checked.
