What is brain fog with COVID?

Short answer

COVID-related brain fog describes difficulty concentrating, remembering, finding words or organising tasks during or after infection.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible experiences
Slow thinking, forgetfulness, poor focus or word-finding difficulty
Safety
Avoid driving when attention or reaction time is unreliable

What the symptoms can feel like

You may lose your train of thought, need longer to process information, forget an appointment or struggle to switch between tasks. Mental effort can feel unusually tiring. These experiences can occur during recovery and may form part of Long COVID, but brain fog is a symptom rather than a diagnosis that identifies one cause.

Poor sleep, stress, low mood, anxiety, anaemia, medication effects and other health problems can also affect attention. Insomnia, depression, burnout and generalised anxiety disorder are examples of conditions that may need consideration when concentration problems continue.

Practical steps

Keep tasks short, use written reminders and allow extra time for decisions. Take regular rest breaks before exhaustion builds, maintain a steady sleep routine, drink enough fluid and return to activity gradually. Record when symptoms appear, what makes them worse and whether sleep or exertion changes them. A clinician can review medicines, sleep and other possible contributors.

When to seek care

Seek emergency help for sudden confusion, facial drooping, one-sided weakness, trouble speaking, a seizure, severe headache or difficulty breathing. Arrange a medical review when brain fog is worsening, interferes with work or daily safety, or continues after the acute illness. Do not drive if attention or reaction time feels unreliable.

Questions for your doctor

Could my sleep, medicines, mood or another condition be affecting concentration? What symptoms should I track? Would an assessment for Long COVID, anaemia or a sleep disorder be appropriate?

Questions people ask

Does brain fog prove that I have Long COVID?

No. Brain fog can occur after COVID-19, but sleep problems, mood symptoms, anaemia, medicines and other conditions can cause similar difficulties.

When should I get help for brain fog?

Arrange a review when symptoms persist, worsen or disrupt work and daily activities; seek emergency help for sudden confusion or stroke-like symptoms.
