Azelaic acid helps reduce blocked pores and the inflammation involved in acne. It can also help calm certain redness and bumps associated with inflammatory facial skin conditions. By reducing excess pigment production after inflammation, it may gradually soften the appearance of post-inflammatory dark marks.

It is available in different formulations and strengths. Improvement is gradual, and the right choice depends on the diagnosis, skin sensitivity, affected area, and other products being used.
