What is a high PSA level for prostate cancer?

PSA is a protein made by prostate cells. A raised result can occur with prostate cancer, but also with benign prostate enlargement, inflammation, infection, recent procedures, or ejaculation. A lower result does not completely exclude cancer. Clinicians consider the result alongside your age, family history, prostate examination, urinary symptoms, and previous PSA results.

A change in PSA over time may add context, but it is not a diagnosis by itself. The result may be repeated under suitable conditions, followed by examination, imaging, or other tests.

Discuss the result with the clinician who ordered it. Tell them about urinary difficulty, burning, fever, recent catheterisation or prostate procedures, cycling, ejaculation, and medicines such as drugs used for prostate enlargement, because these details affect interpretation. Do not stop prescribed medicine without advice.

Your clinician may repeat the test, check for infection, examine the prostate, or arrange specialist assessment. If cancer is suspected, imaging and a biopsy may be considered before treatment choices are discussed.

Seek prompt medical care if you cannot pass urine, have fever or chills with urinary symptoms, see significant blood in urine, or develop severe pelvic pain. These problems may need urgent treatment regardless of the PSA result.

Ask what your result means in context, whether it should be repeated, what could temporarily raise it, and whether examination, imaging, or specialist referral is appropriate.
