What is 3D/4D ultrasound used for?

A 3D scan combines ultrasound views into a still, three-dimensional image. A 4D scan adds movement, producing a live view as the baby changes position. These views may help an ultrasound professional examine certain surface features, such as the face or limbs, when the position and fluid around the baby allow a clear view.

The main pregnancy assessment remains a clinical ultrasound examination. A detailed anomaly scan checks the baby’s development and anatomy, while a growth scan assesses growth and related measurements. Three-dimensional images may add detail, but they do not replace the standard checks or guarantee that every condition will be seen.

Follow the instructions from the imaging service. Depending on the stage of pregnancy and the type of examination, you may be asked to attend with a comfortably full bladder or no special preparation. Wear clothing that allows access to the abdomen. During the scan, the professional applies gel and moves a probe over the skin; you may need to change position or walk briefly if the baby’s position limits the view.

Ask whether the appointment is a medical assessment, an additional keepsake view, or both. Confirm how findings will be explained and whether another scan is needed if images are limited.

Contact your maternity team promptly for vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking from the vagina, severe or persistent abdominal pain, regular painful contractions, or noticeably reduced fetal movement after you have been advised how to monitor it. A routine 3D or 4D appointment is not a substitute for urgent assessment of these symptoms.
