What if vulval steroid treatment does not relieve skin changes?

Steroids reduce inflammation, but ongoing colour change, thickening, cracking, soreness, or altered texture can have several explanations. The condition may need longer monitoring, a different application plan, or another diagnosis such as irritation, eczema, psoriasis, infection, or a medication reaction. Repeated rubbing and scratching can maintain damage. A persistent area may need direct examination rather than treatment changes based only on symptoms.

Contact the prescriber and describe exactly what has changed, where it is, and whether there is pain, itching, bleeding, discharge, or a lump. Bring the medicine and follow the prescribed instructions until reviewed unless a clinician tells you otherwise. Use bland, fragrance-free products, avoid scratching and hair-removal irritation, and choose loose breathable underwear. Do not use leftover creams or increase steroid applications on your own.

Arrange prompt assessment for a new lump, an ulcer or open sore, bleeding from altered skin, a firm area, a wound that does not heal, or a rapidly changing patch. Seek urgent help for severe swelling, fever, spreading redness, inability to pass urine, or breathing difficulty after a product.
