What if topical corticosteroids does not relieve itchy skin?

Corticosteroids calm inflammation, but itching can continue when the trigger remains, the condition is not mainly steroid-responsive, or the skin has become irritated by a product. Eczema, contact dermatitis, psoriasis, scabies, fungal infection, hives, dry skin, and nerve-related itch can look different and need different care. Scratching can also damage the surface and keep the itch cycle active.

A clinician will consider the distribution, scale, blisters, burrows, swelling, and exposure history. Tell them whether other household members itch, whether a new medicine or product was involved, and where the cream was applied.

Apply the prescribed product only to the areas and for the duration advised. Do not use a stronger steroid, extend it to the face or skin folds, or stop a long course abruptly without medical guidance. Use lukewarm water, a gentle cleanser, a plain moisturiser, and cool compresses to reduce irritation. Keep nails short and avoid scratching as much as possible.
