What if sports massage does not relieve calf pain?

Short answer
If sports massage does not relieve calf pain, stop deep massage and arrange an assessment to check for muscle, tendon, joint, nerve or circulation-related causes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why massage may not help
Massage may ease muscle tightness, but calf pain can also come from a strain, Achilles or knee problem, nerve irritation, an injury to the bone, or a blood-flow problem. Pain that began during exercise, tenderness in one spot, swelling, cramping, numbness or symptoms that occur while walking each provide different clues. Firm pressure can aggravate an injured muscle and is not appropriate when a clot or other urgent cause is possible.
What to do while arranging care
Avoid further deep massage, strenuous running and forceful stretching until the cause is clearer. Note when the pain began, whether one calf is swollen, and whether walking or rest changes it. A clinician can examine the calf, knee, ankle and circulation, then advise on activity and rehabilitation. Do not use massage to push through worsening pain. When calf pain needs urgent help
Seek urgent medical help for one-sided calf swelling, warmth or redness, sudden unexplained pain, or pain with breathlessness, chest discomfort, faintness or coughing blood. Emergency assessment is also needed after a snap with inability to push off, or when the foot becomes cold, pale, numb or weak. These symptoms can signal a problem that massage cannot safely treat.
Questions for the assessment
Ask whether the symptoms fit a muscle injury, tendon problem, nerve irritation or circulation concern; which activities are safe; and whether examination or testing is needed. Ask when gentle movement or physiotherapy should begin and which warning signs should bring you back sooner.

Questions people ask
Can massage worsen a calf strain?
Yes. Firm pressure or stretching can irritate injured tissue, particularly soon after a sudden strain, so worsening pain deserves review.
Why is a swollen calf different from ordinary muscle tightness?
Swelling, warmth or redness in one calf can have causes beyond muscle tightness and should be assessed promptly, especially if symptoms began without clear exertion.
