If a smoking cessation programme does not relieve shortness of breath, seek medical assessment because breathlessness can have causes needing separate treatment. Stopping smoking reduces an ongoing irritant, but it may not reverse established airway narrowing or address asthma, infection, anaemia, or a heart problem. Do not wait for cessation support alone to resolve new or worsening breathing difficulty.

Breathlessness may be related to airway inflammation, chronic lung disease, an infection, low blood haemoglobin, reduced fitness, anxiety, or cardiovascular strain.
