What if scalp cooling does not relieve hair loss from cancer treatment?

Scalp cooling lowers scalp temperature and may reduce blood flow to hair follicles during some treatments. It cannot protect every follicle, and results depend on the medicine, dose schedule, fit and use of the cap, and individual response. Hair shedding may begin during treatment or later, and the scalp can feel tender or sensitive. Continued hair loss does not mean the cancer treatment is ineffective.

Tell the team how quickly the shedding is progressing and whether you have scalp pain, redness, sores, or itching. Use gentle hair and scalp care, avoid harsh chemicals and high heat, and protect exposed skin from sun and cold. Ask about wigs, scarves, head coverings, and a referral for emotional support. Do not stop or change cancer treatment because of hair loss without discussing it with the oncology team.

Contact the cancer team promptly for blistering, open areas, marked swelling, pus, spreading redness, fever, or severe scalp pain. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, or a rapidly spreading rash, especially if these begin during a cooling session.

Ask whether your treatment commonly causes hair loss despite cooling, whether the cap fit and timing were appropriate, and whether cooling should continue. Ask which products are safe for your scalp and where to find practical or emotional support.
