What if radical hysterectomy does not relieve bleeding between periods?

Radical hysterectomy removes the uterus and nearby tissues, but bleeding may arise from healing tissue at the top of the vagina, irritation, infection, a vaginal or urinary source, or another pelvic problem. The timing, amount, colour, clots, pain, discharge, and relationship to activity help clinicians identify the source. Persistent bleeding does not by itself show that cancer is present or that the operation has failed.

Record when the bleeding occurs and whether it follows walking, intercourse, lifting, or urination. Tell the team about medicines that affect clotting, fever, pelvic pain, dizziness, or unusual discharge. Do not insert anything into the vagina or resume restricted activity until your surgeon confirms it is suitable. Assessment may include a pelvic examination, blood tests, urine testing, or imaging, depending on your symptoms and recovery stage.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy or rapidly increasing bleeding, faintness, severe or worsening abdominal pain, fever with feeling unwell, shortness of breath, or a swollen and painful abdomen. If bleeding is light but repeated, arrange prompt contact with the treating team rather than waiting for a routine follow-up.

Ask whether the bleeding could come from the vaginal cuff or another organ, which activities should be paused, and which warning signs require emergency care. You can also ask when an examination or scan is needed and how current medicines may affect bleeding.
