What if nebuliser treatment does not relieve shortness of breath?

A nebuliser delivers medicine as a mist, but persistent breathlessness can have several causes. The medicine may not match the problem, the airway narrowing may be severe, or infection, an allergic reaction, heart problems, a blood clot, or another condition may be involved. The equipment, mask seal, medicine dose, and technique can also affect delivery.

Ongoing symptoms do not show which cause is responsible. A clinician may check your breathing rate, oxygen level, pulse, chest sounds, temperature, and response to treatment before deciding what happens next. Do not repeat extra nebuliser doses unless a clinician has given you a specific plan.

Stop exertion and sit upright in a position that makes breathing easier. Use only your prescribed rescue medicine according to the instructions you were given. Keep the nebuliser device and medicine packaging available, and note when treatment was taken and whether symptoms changed. If you have an established asthma or lung-care plan, follow its emergency instructions.

Have someone stay with you if possible. Do not drive yourself if breathing is difficult, you feel faint, or you are becoming confused. Tell the healthcare team about chest pain, fever, wheezing, cough, swelling, allergies, pregnancy, and any heart or lung condition.

Call local emergency services immediately for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, inability to speak in full sentences, blue or grey lips, collapse, marked drowsiness, confusion, choking, or sudden chest pain. Emergency help is also needed after a possible severe allergic reaction, especially with swelling of the face or throat. Do not wait for another nebuliser treatment to work.
