What if nasal cautery does not relieve a nosebleed?

Cautery treats a visible bleeding point inside the nose, but bleeding can continue if the source is difficult to see, the area is irritated, or more than one vessel is involved. Dry air, nose picking, forceful blowing, injury, infection, and medicines that affect clotting can also contribute. Ongoing or repeated bleeding needs a clinician to check the nose and your general health.

Sit upright, lean forward, and pinch the soft part of the nose continuously while breathing through your mouth. Do not tilt your head back or repeatedly release the pressure to check. After bleeding settles, avoid nose blowing, picking, heavy exertion, and hot drinks for a while; follow the aftercare instructions from your clinician. Arrange review if bleeding returns, lasts longer than expected, or you feel weak.

Go to an emergency department if bleeding is heavy, does not stop with sustained pressure, follows a significant injury, or causes dizziness, faintness, weakness, or trouble breathing. Seek prompt medical advice if you take blood-thinning medicine or have a known bleeding problem. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint.

Ask: Where is the bleeding coming from? Does the cauterised area need checking? Should I use a nasal moisturiser or other aftercare? Could a medicine or health condition be contributing? What should I do if it starts again?
