What if mid-urethral sling does not relieve leaking urine?

A sling supports the urethra, so it is most relevant to stress leakage caused by coughing, sneezing, movement, or lifting. Urgency leakage, frequent urination, bladder irritation, incomplete emptying, or a mixture of leakage types may need a different approach. Ongoing leakage does not by itself show that the sling is misplaced or that another operation is needed.

Contact the surgeon or a continence specialist and describe when urine escapes, whether there is urgency, and how often you empty your bladder. A review may include an examination, urine testing, a bladder diary, or checking whether the bladder empties properly. Ask about pelvic floor therapy, bladder training, medicines, or other options before considering additional surgery. Do not restrict fluids severely.

Seek prompt help for inability to pass urine, severe lower abdominal pain, fever, burning with urination, blood in the urine, new wound discharge, or rapidly worsening symptoms after surgery. Urgent review is also needed for severe pain with a swollen abdomen or feeling faint.

Ask whether the leakage is stress, urgency, or mixed incontinence; whether urine infection or incomplete emptying should be checked; and whether the sling is healing as expected. Discuss bladder training, pelvic floor care, medicines, further tests, and the risks and purpose of any additional procedure.
