What if lymphoedema therapy does not relieve arm or leg swelling?

Lymphoedema can fluctuate and may respond gradually. The garment may not fit correctly, fluid may be collecting in a different area, or the treatment plan may need changing. Other causes, including infection, a blood clot, vein problems, heart or kidney disease, and medication effects, can also produce limb swelling. A swollen limb is not automatically lymphoedema, so a new pattern deserves clinical review.

Note which limb is affected, when swelling is greatest, skin changes, heaviness, pain and how the garment feels. Take the garment to your lymphoedema therapist so fit and pressure can be checked. Continue only the exercises, compression and skin-care routine that you were taught; avoid tight improvised bandages and vigorous massage over painful or red skin. Protect the skin from cuts, moisturise as advised and report breaks promptly.

Get same-day medical advice for sudden one-sided swelling, warmth, redness, tenderness, fever or rapidly worsening discomfort. Seek emergency help for breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting or sudden severe swelling. These signs can indicate a problem needing urgent treatment rather than routine lymphoedema care.
