What if IV fluid therapy does not relieve nausea?

IV fluids replace some fluid lost through vomiting or poor intake, but they do not remove every trigger of nausea. Infection, migraine, reflux, medication effects, pregnancy, gallbladder or bowel problems, and changes affecting the brain or balance system can all be relevant. Nausea without dehydration may not improve simply because fluid was given. The timing of symptoms, ability to eat and drink, abdominal pain, bowel changes and recent medicines help a clinician decide what to examine next.

Take small, frequent sips of fluid and try bland foods only as tolerated. Avoid alcohol, strong smells and foods that clearly trigger symptoms. Do not take anti-nausea medicine prescribed for another person. Arrange review if nausea keeps returning, prevents normal intake or began after a new medicine; take the medicine list and note any vomiting, pain, fever, headache, diarrhoea or pregnancy possibility. A clinician can decide whether testing or targeted treatment is appropriate.

Seek urgent care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, blood or coffee-ground material in vomit, green vomit, fainting, confusion, severe headache, stiff neck, chest pain or trouble breathing. Get prompt help if you cannot keep fluids down, are passing very little urine or become markedly weak. These features can indicate a problem needing more than rehydration.
