What if IV fluid therapy does not relieve excessive thirst?

Thirst is a signal that the body needs to balance water and dissolved salts, but it can continue when the underlying trigger remains. Continued urination, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, sweating or a dry mouth can keep the sensation going. High blood sugar can draw water into urine, while some medicines and kidney or hormone problems can alter fluid balance. IV fluids may temporarily add fluid without correcting one of these drivers, so persistent thirst should not be treated by repeatedly seeking infusions alone.

Contact a clinician promptly and describe how much you are drinking, how often you urinate, whether urine is unusually pale or dark, and any weight change, blurred vision, weakness or nausea. Bring a list of medicines and supplements. Testing may include blood sugar, salts and kidney function, guided by your symptoms. Drink to thirst unless a clinician has given you a fluid restriction, and avoid trying to correct the problem with very large amounts of water or sugary drinks.

Seek urgent care for confusion, unusual drowsiness, fainting, severe weakness, difficulty breathing, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down or very little urine. Go promptly if excessive thirst comes with abdominal pain, rapid breathing or a fruity-smelling breath. These symptoms can signal a serious fluid or metabolic disturbance requiring more than IV hydration.
