What if hysterectomy does not relieve pelvic pain?

Hysterectomy treats problems involving the uterus, but pelvic pain can also involve the ovaries, bladder, bowel, pelvic floor muscles, nerves, scar tissue, or infection. If endometriosis or another pain condition affected areas beyond the uterus, removing the uterus may not remove every pain source. Pain soon after surgery can reflect healing, while pain that persists, changes, or returns should be assessed in context.

Contact your gynaecologist or surgical team and describe where the pain is, its character, triggers, severity, and whether it relates to urination, bowel movements, movement, or sex. Mention fever, bleeding, discharge, vomiting, and changes in bladder or bowel function. Keep taking prescribed medicines only as directed, and avoid increasing pain medicine without advice. Assessment may include an examination and targeted tests based on your symptoms.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain, a rigid or swollen abdomen, faintness, heavy bleeding, fever with worsening pain, repeated vomiting, inability to pass urine, or inability to open your bowels with increasing swelling. New chest pain or breathlessness after surgery also requires emergency attention.
