What if growth factor support does not relieve unexplained fever?

Growth factor support helps the body produce certain blood cells; it is not a general treatment for every cause of fever. Fever may result from infection, inflammation, a medicine reaction or the cancer itself. During chemotherapy or periods of low immunity, an infection can worsen quickly and may not cause obvious local symptoms at first. The absence of another symptom does not make persistent fever safe to ignore.

Use a thermometer and record the readings, time, recent treatment, medicines and associated symptoms. Call the number supplied by your oncology service and follow its threshold instructions; do not wait for the next appointment. The team may arrange examination, blood tests and cultures, and may start treatment while results are pending. Do not take leftover antibiotics or extra fever medicine unless the clinical team tells you to, because these can obscure assessment or interact with treatment.

Seek emergency care for trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, a seizure, severe weakness, uncontrolled shivering, or inability to drink. Also seek immediate advice for fever with a new rash, severe abdominal pain, painful urination or a rapidly worsening cough. Tell staff that you are receiving or have recently received cancer treatment.
